How to Decide on Methods to Manufacture Your Prototype

  Advantages Disadvantages
Rapid CNC Machining Prototyping Better for functional prototypes that need real materials, tighter tolerances, and smoother surfaces . More suitable for metal and plastic parts close to final production. Usually costs more than 3D printing for early samples. Lead time can be longer when the part has deep cavities, tight features, or complex setups.
Rapid Sheet Metal Fabrication Prototyping Faster and more economical for thin-wall brackets, panels, covers, and enclosures. Better for testing structure, fit, and simple assembly before production. Less suitable for very complex 3D shapes or fine internal details. Design options are more limited by bending radius, sheet thickness, and forming rules.
Rapid 3D Printing + CNC Machining Faster for complex prototype shapes, with better accuracy added by CNC post-machining. More useful when printed parts need precise holes, threads, faces, or assembly areas. More steps can increase cost and coordination time. Material strength, surface quality, and final accuracy may still be lower than fully CNC-machined parts.
Rapid CNC-Assisted Hybrid Manufacturing More flexible for parts that need mixed processes, such as forming, printing, molding, and CNC finishing. Better for improving key surfaces, holes, threads, and fit areas. Process planning is more complex than using one method. Cost and lead time can rise if the part needs several setups, suppliers, finishes, or inspections.
